Conversations with Other Women

In Conversations with Other Women, director Hans Canosa has elevated split-screen photography, normally a cinematic tic that renders a film irritatingly tautological, to a device that genuinely deepens his couple-meets-cute story line. The brother (Aaron Eckhart) of the bride at a posh NYC wedding sweet-talks his way into a one-night stand with Helena Bonham Carter, a married bridesmaid adorned by a bruised blossom of a puss and, naturally, an unfortunate pink dress. The resentment and remorse yawning beneath their too-clever repartee emerges while simultaneous images of their phantoms — younger selves, other partners, alternative outcomes — evoke rather brilliantly the miseries of how linear time ravages all human connections.
